The result: a series of pilot programmes that demonstrate the power of concrete solutions to improve the sustainability of healthcare systems. Each programme falls under at least one of the three pillars of sustainable healthcare: prevention and early intervention, patient empowerment and reorganisation of care delivery. The most successful pilots are scaled up and every project proves that even small changes have the potential to make a big impact. The power of pilot programmes is that they serve as examples; models that can be adapted to different countries, languages and health systems.

Canada – Alberta gets Fit for Work
AbbVie formed a partnership with the Alberta government, Alberta Health Services and the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan. The project will enroll over 500 Inflammatory Arthritis (IA) patients in a three-pronged study looking at the improvements on health economic outcomes of workplace-sponsored early interventions.
Employee Intervention: Studying the effectiveness of early intervention through an e-learning program, occupational therapy and vocational rehabilitation designed to help people with IA remain at work.
Employer intervention: Evaluating the needs of employers and looking at tools and resources that they could provide to make their workplace fully supportive to employees with IA.
Osteoarthritis – OA intervention: Evaluating which intervention programs are applicable for people diagnosed with OA.
Commencing in January 2016, the study period will be for a total of 24 months, with AbbVie receiving preliminary data halfway through.

Unhealthy lifestyles and lack of physical activity are key factors in the development of chronic diseases. Early prevention and diagnosis, better education, and above all collaboration among governments, patient organizations, and industry are crucial to prevent chronic diseases from arising.
