As one of the flagship initiatives of sustainable healthcare, Fit for Work has been endorsed by 10 presidencies of the Council of the EU since 2009 (Sweden, Spain, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Latvia, Netherlands, Slovakia) and in 2016 by the President of Slovakia.
The Toolkit draws from the flagship pilot programme based in Spain that is helping people suffering from temporary work disabilities receive the care they need to recover faster and return to their normal lives before they are permanently disabled. The results speak for themselves: for those enrolled in the programme, temporary disabilities have dropped by 40 percent and permanent disabilities have dropped by 50 percent. The EI Clinics are also demonstrating that earlier access to care saves money: for each euro invested in the Early Intervention Clinics (EICs), the health and social-care systems see eleven euros in return on investment (ROI). EI Clinics have been scaled up across Spain and are launching in the UK and Germany as well.
The Toolkit offers a map to creating and implementing early intervention programmes.
